Remember as you take to the streets or trails
that you must:
-
Wear a appropriate helmet at all
times
-
Ride responsibly and follow all traffic
and safety laws, rules and
ordinances that apply.
-
Always maintain your equipment.
At a minimum, and before each ride, check
and adjust as necessary:
- tightness of nuts and bolts and quick release levers
- tires for proper air pressure and excessive wear
- brake function, brake pads for proper contact with rims, cables
- safety equipment including helmet and reflectors
- general road worthiness
Your Kickbike® was designed in Finland, to
be enjoyed on paved surfaces only; the exception
is the Cross Country model which, as the name suggests,
can be taken off road. In no case is any Kickbike® designed
for jumping, trick-riding or stunts. It was designed
as an alternative way to get around town, as a
cross-training fitness tool and as a way to get
out and enjoy life. We are confident that you
will enjoy your new Kickbike®. KICKING TIPS
- This is important for your safety
KICKING TIPS - This is important for your safety
-
We strongly advise you to wear an appropriate
helmet when using your Kickbike®.
-
Everybody has a favorite 'scooting' leg -
if you are right handed, it will probably be
your left leg. Find a good flat and smooth
surface and give it a go. Get used to the balance
and feel of the steering and brakes before
whizzing out into the traffic!
-
Learn to change legs - very easy - just pivot
the stationary foot so that there is room at
the front (or rear depending on which foot)
to slide in the other foot - then continue
kicking with the other foot - repeat about
every 4-10 kicks.
-
Let the wonderful rolling speed of the Kickbike® work
for you - you only need to kick when the bike
slows down! Long and slow, long and slow! Uphill
- use shorter kicks more frequently - very
steep; just step off and walk or run!
-
The footboard has a low clearance - so either
lift the bike over curbs or find ramps (you
will scrape the bottom every now and then -
don't worry - it is reinforced underneath).
You will learn to do a little jump to get over
low obstructions.
-
To turn the bike round in a confined area
(when you are off the bike), get used to lifting
the rear of the bike with the toe of one foot
to spin it round - you'll soon do it without
thinking.
-
One of the advantages over bicycles is that
the Kickbike® can be easily lifted (carried)
with one hand - the bike balances by holding
it at the bottom of the frame near the footplate.
If you are right-handed, hold the frame firmly
with your right hand and lightly hold the end
of the handlebars with your left to stop the
wheel swinging around.
-
In some locations 'Scooters' are classed
as pedestrians (unlike bicycles) - so that
conditions willing, you can ride on the pavement
or on back alleys etc. as well as the road
and cycle tracks. Your local police might disagree
and local laws might say otherwise - check!
Obey all local laws and use your common sense
to avoid injuring or upsetting pedestrians
- you will find the Kickbike® much easier
to handle safely than a bicycle amongst pedestrians.
It is crucial that your primary concern is
your personal safety and the safety of those
around you.
-
You will find that you can ride your Kickbike® in
whatever clothes you are wearing - no greasy
chains or sprockets to soil or catch. A small
back-pack allows you to comfortably carry your
kit.
-
Kickbikes® fit into the trunk of many
cars by just taking off the front wheel.
-
With the easy step on and off characteristics
of the Kickbike®, the ability to use pavements
and the easy carrying ability, you will find
that you will use different routes to those
you would choose on a bicycle; nice back routes
away from the traffic and pleasing to the senses
On flat terrain (actually on hilly too!) you
will find you can do 12-20 miles in 2 hours
without excess effort.

Regular Maintenance
Before each ride, you should give the Kickbike® a
thorough safety check. Basic maintenance can be
done easily by most users and involves checking
brake adjustment and tightness of all nuts, bolts
and fasteners before you ride and oiling brake
cables with fine oil (3 in 1 for example) every
month or so. Maintain the tires at the recommended
pressures to keep your Kickbike® rolling fast
and free. Keep the Kickbike® free of mud and
grime by washing in a dilute mild detergent, and
polish every now and then with a car wax or bike
polish. Your Kickbike® should stay looking
good and running well for many years with the minimum
of effort.
Annual Maintenance
It is recommended that you put your Kickbike® in
for an annual service in a bicycle shop. They will
check and straighten rims, lubricate and adjust
bearings, check and service brakes, adjust suspension
forks (if applicable) and identify potential problems
which might have an effect on the quality of your
ride and your safety.
Replacement Tires and Tubes
The Sport Classic and City Cruiser models an
use the same wheels/tires. The front tire and inner
tube is a standard 700 X 35C high pressure road
tire; you can fit any tire of your choice which
safely fits the 700C rim. The rear tire is an 18” x
1.5”and can be obtained from some most recumbent/folding
bike shops or from Kickbikeamerica.com.
The Millennium Racer model has 700C-28C on the front and 16” X 1 3/8”on
the rear wheel. Rear replacement tires and inner tubes can also be ordered
from Kickbikeamerica.com
The Cross Country model has 26” X 2.35” on the front and 18” X
1.75”on the rear wheel. Rear replacement tires and inner tubes can also
be ordered from Kickbikeamerica.com
Remember! - Maintenance and Adjustment Schedule
Each time you ride:
-
Check tightness of nuts and bolts and quick
release levers - tighten if necessary
-
Check brake function - adjust if necessary
-
Check tire pressure - inflate if necessary
Every month or so:
-
Lubricate brake cables with fine (3 in 1
type) oil
-
Check spoke tightness - tighten if loose
to prevent rim damage
-
Check that the headset is not loose but that
the handlebars turn freely and smoothly
-
Clean tires with water and check for damage
-
Clean mud etc. from frame and wheels and
protect with a wax (non-abrasive) or polish.
At least every year
-
Check headset and wheel bearing adjustment
- take to cycle shop for adjustment
-
Check trueness of rims - take to cycle shop
for correction
We recommend that you take your Kickbike® to
a qualified bicycle technician at least once a
year for a full service and adjustment or more
frequently as necessary. |
